Post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands on March 30, 1853. He had a great influence on 20th century art, though his works were not well known during his life. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 37, on July 29, 1890, after a lifelong struggle with mental illness.
