The official cause of Jim Henson's death was first reported as streptococcus pneumonia, a bacterial infection. Bacterial pneumonia is caused by bacteria known as Streptococcus pneumoniae in many occasions. Henson's cause of death, however, was due to organ failure resulting from Streptococcus pyogenes, a severe Group A streptococcal infection. Streptococcus pyogenes is the bacterial species that causes scarlet fever, strep throat and rheumatic fever.
