What type of dog was Toto in "The Wizard of Oz"?

In the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz," Toto was a Cairn terrier. Toto's real name was Terry. She was born in 1933, and her owner and trainer was Carl Spitz.

Terry's name was changed to Toto after she appeared in "The Wizard of Oz" because so many people were calling her Toto. During the filming of "The Wizard of Oz," Terry broke her foot when one of the guards stepped on her. She recuperated at the home of Judy Garland for two weeks before returning to the set. Judy Garland wanted to adopt her, but Carl Spitz refused.

Terry's salary was $125 per week, which was more than what most of the actors in the movie were paid. Terry died of old age in 1945.
