India's long history of diverse populations has given the subcontinent a fantastic range of languages. The two major language families are the Indo-Aryan languages, which are spoken mainly in the north, and the Dravidian languages, spoken mostly in the south. The country is also home to Tibeto-Burman, Austro-Asiatic, Nuristani and Iranian languages. Because of the British colonial history in India, English is a common language everywhere, and many government documents and legal communications are written in English.
