John Lennon was officially pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m. on December 8, 1980. The pronouncement was made at Roosevelt Hospital on the west side of Manhattan 25 minutes after the rock star was shot by Mark David Chapman.
At 10:50 p.m. on December 8, 1980, John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, exited a limo outside the Dakota building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Earlier that day Lennon had signed a copy of his "Double Fantasy" album for fan Mark David Chapman. As Lennon and Yoko walked toward an entrance to the Dakota, where they lived, Chapman pulled out a .38 calibre handgun and fired the gun at Lennon repeatedly. Lennon received four gunshot wounds, and police arrived within minutes. The police brought Lennon to Roosevelt Hospital, where doctors were unable to revive him.
