Castro is famous for overthrowing Cuban leader Batista in 1959 by using guerrilla warfare to become prime minister of the island country. His relations with the Soviet Union famously led to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served as prime minister of Cuba until 1976 when he became president. He served as president until February 19, 2008 when he stepped down due to health issues. He now spends his time writing articles about his opinions and experiences in a column called "Reflections of Fidel."
