The British pop group Take That formed in 1990. The group made its debut on the popular television show "The Hit Man and Her," singing a song penned by group leader Gary Barlow.
Take That sprang from the mind of manager Nigel Martin-Smith. Smith sought to develop a music group made up of young male singers as the British answer to the successful U.S. pop group New Kids on the Block. Smith met Barlow in 1989 and immediately began to build the group around Barlow's vocal talents. Other members of Take That include Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Robbie Williams, who went on to enjoy a strong solo career in the late 1990s.
