Bombay changed its name to Mumbai because this was an act of the Indian parliament in 1997. The reason for this name change was as a result that in two of the local languages, Marathi and Gujarati, the city had long been called Mumbai. It is said that the name comes from one of the old Koli goddesses whose name was Mumbai Devi, a temple to whom now stands in Bhuleshwar.
