BBC Radio 1 was launched on 30th September, 1967 at 7 am on a Saturday. The first show was hosted by DJ Tony Blackburn and the first song played was 'Flowers in the rain' by The Move. The station was formed at the request of the British Government after the banning of pirate radio stations to fulfil a need in the UK for a legal pop music radio network.
