In order to determine when insulation was first used, you'd have to know what kind of insulation. People have been insulating their homes from the beginning of their existence. The creation of a wall itself, is, in fact insulation. There have been many homes found to be insulated with simple old newspapers, mud, or straw were commonly found in homes in the 1800's. Currently the most common insulation is fiberglass insulation and it was first discovered in 1938.
