Almost 300 years after New Spain was created, on September 16, 1810, independence from Spain was declared by Priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, in the small town of Dolores, Guanajuato.

Mexico City was founded in 1325 by the Aztecs on the Island of Lake Texcoco which was almost completly destroyed in a seige in 1521. After being redesigned and rebuilt it officially became known as Mexico City in 1585. Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas.
