Where Did Blackballing Come from?

Answer

The word blackball means to blacklist or prevent the admission of a person into a place. The practice of blackballing is thought to have its origin in ancient Greece as ancient Greeks used dark or light seashells known as ostrakon as voting ballots. The word 'ostracize' was coined from the name of the seashells. In the past, the fate of a suspect would be decided by balloting using black and white balls. If the black balls turned out to be the most, the person would be banished and would be said to have been blackballed.
