Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918, at Mvezo, a tiny village on the banks of the Mbashe River in the district of Umtata, South Africa. His original name was Rolihlahla which was Xhosa (his tribe) for pulling a tree branch. He grew up in a large poor polygamous family. After the death of his father, he was taken up by another family from where he went to college and into politics.
