Where Did the Saying Saved by the Bell Come from?

Answer

Saved by the bell' is boxing slang used in the late 1800s. When a boxer is holding out but in danger of being defeated, the bell that announces the end of the round may save him from losing. In a February 1893 edition of the Massachusetts newspaper 'The Fitchburg Daily Sentinel', this use appeared: 'Flaherty defeated Bobby Burns in 32 rounds by a complete knockout. Half a dozen times Flaherty was saved by the bell in earlier rounds.
