Chromium is a chemical element with the atomic number 24 and chemical symbol Cr. It is a hard metal and is steely gray in colour. Though it is not documented where it was first discovered, its compound chromium oxide was used over 2000 years ago by the Chinese to coat weapons. The world's largest chromium producer is South Africa followed by India then Kazakhstan and Zimbabwe. Finland, Iran and Brazil also produce a substantial amount.
