Maghreb is a region of northwest Africa comprising the Atlas Mountains and the coastlands of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. It was conquered by the Arabs in the seventh century and remains Arabic in culture and religion today. Arabic language became widespread in the region after the invasion of the Banu Hilal.
