Early microscopes were made in Middelburg, The Netherlands in 1590 by Zacharias and Hans Jansen and Hans Lippershey.
The first microscope was built in Holland. A gentleman named Zacharias Jansenn discovered the principles when he was working at his job grinding lenses for eyeglasses. He found that by combining layers of glass, things would appear bigger. The first made for a practical use was made by Anton van Leeuwenhoek, also from Holland, he began manufacturing them as a hobby and each model seemed to improve and gain in capability. An interesting side note, a common microscope today can magnify up to 1500 times the size of the item it's examining.
