Sochi organized the Winter Games into two groups, one coastal group for ice events and the Krasnaya Polyana cluster for the remaining events. With only 30 minutes distance travel between the two clusters, Sochi was one of the most compact Winter Games. Russia built the Sochi Olympic Park along the coast of the Black Sea. The distance between the park and coastal venues was only 6 km, or 3.7 miles, on average, and within the mountain cluster, the distance between the village and the venues was only 4 km, or 2.5 miles.
