A total of 30 countries among them Australia, Russia, USA, New Zealand, UK and Germany have bases in Antarctica. Australia was the first country to set base there in 1954 at a base known as Mawson base. The Mawson camp was named after explorer Mawson, who was one of the first people to reach the magnetic south in 1909.
