The European Union had 27 member countries as at January 01, 2007 but based on its enlargement plan, will include 10 more countries. The new EU members to be considered in the enlargement strategy include Croatia, Iceland, Turkey, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo. The European Union is governed by the Council of the European Union and is the main decision making body presently.
