There were many battles in which the Vikings were defeated. Alfred the Great defeated the Vikings under Guthrum at the Battle of Erdington in 878. Brian Boru also defeated Mael Morda Mac Murchada whose army included a contingent of Norse mercenaries lead by his cousin Sigtrygg at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014.
