As early as the 1600's scientists were postulating the existence of cells. Robert Hooke described cells in 1665. Marcello Malpighi and Nehemiah Gre, made detailed studies of plant cells at the same time. In 1676 the Dutch microscopist Antony van Leeuwenhoek published observations of single-cell organisms, Frenchman Henri Milne-Edwards, Henri Dutrochet, Francois Raspail and Barthelemy Dumortier all postulated different theories.
