The study began in 1793 on bats, who are blind and general use sonar or sounds to determine how close the bat is to an object. The study of bats by Spallanzani, and the equations developed by Clerk Maxwell lead to the development what was called an 'obstacle detector' by Christian Hulsmeyer, which is actually radar.
