The first ruler was invented by a Greek engineer known as Theodorus of Crete. He was also a sculptor as well as an architect and lived around the sixth century BC. Invention of the ruler is however considered to be by different civilizations of different time periods. The first unit of length was the cubit which was used by the Egyptians and Babylonians.
