Although there were many versions of the microscope in the 16th century, a scientist called Zaccharias Janssen and his son Han were the first to experiment with two lenses in a tube. This was in 1527, and their original ideas were later refined by Robert Hooke. These developments caused great excitement throughout Europe and led to a large number of discoveries.

The microscope was invented by Hans and Zaccharias Janssen sometime in 1590. This was a father and son team of Dutch eyeglass makers. They were the first known people to put two magnifying lenses in a tube, thus creating the compound microscope.
