Soul singer Dobie Gray recorded the song "Drift Away," which contains the lyrics "Give me the beat boys and free my soul." It was a top-five hit in 1973.

Gray was born in Texas in 1940. Growing up, he learned music from his grandfather, who was a Baptist minister. During the 1960s, Gray moved to California and scored in 1965 with "The 'In' Crowd." His first hit climbed to number 15. Gray's classic "Drift Away" was written by Mentor Williams, brother of another prolific songwriter, Paul Williams.
