Who was the first rapper in history?

Most experts recognize the first rap MC as Coke La Rock, a New York City rapper who came to prominence in the 1970s. La Rock got his start rapping at parties hosted by his friend DJ Kool Herc, a Jamaican immigrant generally considered to be the father of hip hop.

Kool Herc perfected a process of using two turntables to play only the instrumental break sections of records, thus creating the earliest form of rap beats. At parties, La Rock worked the crowd while Herc played records. Eventually La Rock's "raps," which were usually just improvised shout-outs to his friends and jokes for the audience, influenced an entire generation of rappers, who began composing their own rhymes.
