Who wrote the song "Deck the Halls"?

Thomas Oliphant wrote the English lyrics to "Deck the Halls" and published them in 1862, according to About.com. Author John Jones wrote the Welsh lyrics that were included in the same 1862 publication, called "Welsh Melodies, Volume 2."

The melody of this traditional Christmas carol was sung as far back as the 16th century, according to About.com. It borrows a tune from a Welsh song that focuses on love, chilly weather and the beginning of a new year. While Oliphant changed the focus of the song to preparing for Christmas, he retained the famous "fa la la" line that appeared in the Welsh version.
