Why Did Anne Frank Call Her Diary Kitty?

Answer

Anne Frank named her diary 'kitty' because she felt that since her diary was going to be her new friend, she should give it a name other than using the phrase 'dear dairy'. She wanted it to be real to her and have its own name so it seemed as a real person who she could express her utmost feelings about anyone or anything. She always started her entries with 'lieve Kitty' which is Dutch for 'Dear Kitty'.

Anne Frank called her diary Kitty, most likely in honour of Moortje, the cat she had to leave behind when her family fled their Merwedeplein family home to go into hiding on the 6th July, 1940. She received the diary from her father as a birthday present.
