Why Did the Berlin Wall Go up?

The Berlin Wall was set up in 1961 by the communist government of East Germany prevent people from fleeing to the West. The wall made it difficult for people working on either side to communicate and exchange goods. The wall which had become a symbol of communism came down in 1989.
