WebMD explains that landing on the toes while running can cause a condition known as metatarsalgia. This condition leads to sharp pain and swelling of the toes of either one or both feet.
By repeatedly placing all of weight on their toes first, runners increase the amount of direct trauma they must bear. For those who develop metatarsalgia, WebMD recommends resting the foot and applying ice to calm the inflamed tissues. To prevent this painful inflammation of the muscles and ligaments, WebMD advises concentrating on each step while running. It is better to land on the heel of the foot first and to round out the step at the toes.
