People speak different languages because in the early societies, which were remote to each other and they developed different sounds that represented various items and concepts. As long as everyone in the society agreed on what the words meant, it could become an arbitrary sound and finally a language they all understood. According to the biblical theory, when people thought of building a kingdom into the heavens, God didn't want them so He led the people into different languages.
