Why do people measure atmospheric conditions?

People, particularly meteorologists, measure atmospheric conditions mainly in an attempt to predict the weather. Atmospheric conditions include many variables, including temperature, moisture, air speed, air pressure, and visibility, among others. In the case of thunderstorms, electrical charge can also be measured as well. Since 1958, models have defined specific properties for the United States and its various altitudes across the nation. This model is known as The U.S. Standard Atmosphere. This standard was last updated in 1976.
