Rainbows appear due to the refraction of white light. White light is refracted off the droplets of rain and the different colours are refracted differently as they differ in wavelength causing the separation of white light into the seven distinct colours that make up the rainbow.

A rainbow will appear if the air has a high moisture content, like after a rain. The sunlight hits the water drops and reflects off of them. What you see is the entire color spectrum in the form of a rainbow.
