Why Do They Call Coffee Joe?

Answer

It is believed by many that coffee was named after Admiral Josephus 'Joe' Daniels (1862-1948) who was the appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson. He embarked on a series of reforms, for example the introduction of women into the service as well as effectively banning alcohol on board ships which included the officer's wine mess. This generally left the sailors with coffee, which became referred to rather contemptuously as Joe, after the Secretary.
