Why Do We Need to Recycle Plastics?

Plastics are one of the most disposable materials and makes up most of our street side litter found in cities around the world. Plastics are easy to recycle which is important as a lot of our landfills are filling up with plastics yet significant amounts of fossil fuels are required to manufacture new ones and recycling would preserve this fuels which can be reused elsewhere. Plastics are not biodegradable and burning plastics leads to the production of greenhouse gases which pollute the environment.

Plastic is among the most widely used materials in the world today. Unfortunately, it is non-biodegradable so when it is not recycled, it goes into the landfill and it stays there for a long time. It is estimated that it takes about 20 years for plastic to decompose while it takes 250 years before a plastic cup rots. It also takes a lot of energy to create plastic. Manufacturers burn a lot of fossil fuel to meet the demand for plastic. Burning fossil fuel is extremely detrimental to the environment and it is one of the primary causes of global warming. If plastic is recycled, energy will be saved and also greenhouse gases will be reduced.
Plastic should be recycled as it not biodegradable thus it can not decay. Therefore, if not recycled this could lead to accumulation of waste matter in the environment. Recycling of plastics will also reduce the number of land fills required.
