Why does everything taste salty?

Answer

The common causes of a persistent salty taste in the mouth are dehydration, medications, salivary gland diseases and post-nasal drainage, says the Riverside Health System. In rare cases, a salty taste in the mouth can be caused by a nutritional deficiency, endocrine disorder or neurological disorder, such as migraines or epilepsy.

Changes in taste are often not a sign of a serious underlying health problem, explains the Riverside Health System. One of the possible causes of this condition is dehydration, which involves insufficient fluid intake or too much fluid loss. In this case, a person must check his diet and find out if he is consuming excessive alcohol or caffeine, which can cause fluid loss. This leads to dehydration, which makes saliva saltier.

Riverside Health System explains that a salty taste in the mouth also occurs due to salivary gland diseases, such as Sjogren’s syndrome. A bacterial infection of the salivary glands called sialadenitis is another cause. People with post-nasal drainage due to allergies or sinus infection also tend to experience a persistent salty taste.

The Riverside Health System states that treatment for this condition is aimed at the underlying cause. If it happens because of a certain medication, then the medication has to be stopped or changed to eliminate the problem. If the cause is a bacterial infection, the infection must be treated. Additionally, taste changes sometimes resolve naturally without treatment.
