Copper is a good conductor because it allows heat to pass through it quickly. It is made from a lattice of ions with free electrons and as it is heated, the free electron collides with an ion when heated and gains kinetic energy causing it to move to the cold end. Here it collides with a cold ion making it vibrate thus heating up the cold end and thus the transfer of heat across a copper rod.
