Why Is Indiana Called the Hoosier State?

Answer

Indiana has been called the Hoosier state since the 1830's. Some say it's due to the residents accents when they say 'who's here' or 'who's ear,' a response to a visitor who hailed a pioneer cabin in Indiana or knocked on its door. Others say it's from John Finley's poem 'The Hoosier's Nest' which was used as the 'Carrier's Address'.

There are many believed origins as to why Indiana is the 'Hoosier State'. The one I like to believe, and is rather funny, is about 'The Who's Here Story'. Back when Indiana was just widespread land, homes were very far apart and there were no real close neighbors. So when someone knocked on a cabin door or was heard coming through the woods, a person would yell out 'Who's here' or 'Who's yere'. This evolved into the word 'hoosier'. Silly huh?
