A bachelor's degree is called so because it is an undergraduate academic degree which is awarded for a program or course. This course normally lasts for atleast four years but can also range from six years depending on the part of the world. In some exceptional cases, it also refers to postgraduate degree like bachelor of law, bachelor of music and the bachelor of sacred theology.
