Why is Stephen Hawking in a wheelchair?

Answer

Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS when he was 21 years old. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a form of motor neuron disease. It disrupts the signals to all of the voluntary muscles in the body.

ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is an ultimately fatal disease. It first affects the legs and the hands, reducing motor function. Eventually the affected person loses the ability to walk, hold the body upright, talk clearly or swallow. Often people affected with ALS die from respiratory failure between three and five years after developing symptoms. Only 10 percent survive 10 years or longer. Many people with ALS lose the ability to solve complex problems. Hawking has not only survived for more than 50 years with ALS but is also one of the most respected physicists in the world. He designed his wheelchair which, through the use of electronics, allows him to have a relatively normal life. The wheelchair allows him to translate small hand gestures into words that are spoken by a computer-generated voice box, move around and control things such as the lights, television and doors in his home via a remote control attached to the chair. Despite his handicap, Hawking is a well-known professor and public speaker.
