The US bombed Japan to end the war and to force Japan to surrender. For six months before the atomic bombs were detonated, the USA fire-bombed 67 cities in Japan, so that Japan would surrender. But the country did not surrender. After the atomic bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, many people died. Half of the deaths occurred on the first day. The other deaths occurred due to burns, radiation and other effects of the bombs. Japan surrendered
