Why were early factories built near rivers?

Answer

Early factories were built near rivers because they provided water which was needed to run the machinery found inside the factory. Waterwheels that were run by the flow of rivers were used to generate the energy needed to run machinery. The discovery of coal and iron during the industrial revolution meant these factories did not have to depend on rivers as the only source of energy.
