What are words that mean the same thing called?

Answer

Words that are different but mean the same thing are called synonyms. Cat and feline or dog and canine are synonyms. Human and person are synonyms. On the other hand, a homonym is a word that is spelled like another or sounds like another, but means something different. There, their, and they're are homonyms. Lie is a homonym because it can be lie as in not true or lie as in lie down. Homonyms that are spelled differently are called homophones.
