Aldehydes have a carbonyl group (C=O) on the end of a hydrocarbon chain whereas ketones have a carbonyl group (C=O) somewhere in the middle of a hydrocarbon chain. Ethanal = CH3CHO (aldehyde) Propanone = CH3COCH3 (ketone)
