Alum is used in the pickling process, so look for it in the part of a food supply store where they have jars, pectin and such for canning. You might also ask a pharmacist .

You will not find it in the spice section. That would be in the canning and freezing section. Usually the store stocks the jars and lids, along with alum and pickling salt with the plastic freezer bags.
