The California golden bear disappeared from the state of California in 1922 when the last one was shot in Tulare County, but it is still on the state flag of California.

I have also seen Very large Black bears near the area of the Sierra where the last known Grizzly was shot in 1922, Bartons flat. He still did not look like a grizzly. Is it possible, yea!

None. Brown bears (grizzly is now a subspecies of brown bear) went extinct in California in the mid-late 1800s (I'd have to look up the date). It's still on the state flag though. There are still many black bears in the state however.

Grizzly bears formerly inhabited much of California, the reason the creature is on the state flag. Because of hunting and habitat loss, there are no grizzly bears left in California.
