Quick answer: you would have a pretty big advantage playing split-screen, with a much wider Field Of View, if they used the whole area. Your FOV is pretty much the same with both modes the way they did it.

That won't even do it. All you can do in a theme is set a background image. As far as I can tell, there is no way to change anything about the way messages/calls/pictures are displayed on the external screen.
