Quick answer: you would have a pretty big advantage playing split-screen, with a much wider Field Of View, if they used the whole area. Your FOV is pretty much the same with both modes the way they did it.

In the R2 public beta the splitscreen was 4:3 not fitting any HDtv only sdtvs so I was wondering when you play splitscreen with a friend does it fit the screen on a hdtv or is it still 4:3?

That won't even do it. All you can do in a theme is set a background image. As far as I can tell, there is no way to change anything about the way messages/calls/pictures are displayed on the external screen.
