you see the buttons on the bottom right or left?- IF not then don't bother reading the rest press the plus or minus sign if it doesn't work press the other button and use plus and minus to scroll through options.

Whatever looks best to you. I would agree, Dell LCD monitors tend to be a bit intense for my liking. Set the contrast to zero and everything goes black. Try 50% brightness and 40% contrast.
