Go to www.javasoft.com . The latest version is (at least) 1.3. A full installation requires about 65MB. You also might consider downloading a JAVA IDE (editor + debugger) such as JBuilder or Forte.

Eclipse is the best! This is also a really lightweight easy to use compiler. I used this for my first Java course. I highly recommend it. http://drjava.sourceforge.net/
